Emmaus Journey

Sun, 08/29/2010 - 21:00
Emmaus Journey's mission statement states that it "endeavors to help enable non-practicing Catholics, occasional Catholics, and nominal Catholics experience conversion to Christ, transformation in Christ, and mobilization for Christ as Catholic disciples that motivates them to wholeheartedly embrace Christ and his Church." This sounds good on the surface, but the program originated from an interdenominational, nonprofit organization called the Navigators who are dedicated "to helping people navigate spiritually, to know Christ and to make Him known as they look to Him and His Word to chart their lives". This is a laudable goal—but Catholics have all that they need in the Catholic Church for evangelization. The program's approach is fundamentally flawed because it doesn't recognize the necessity of a "teacher" as opposed to a "facilitator". Jesus was a Teacher and He gave His disciples the command to "Go and teach all nations". Where the Truth is concerned we should be like St. Paul, preaching "in season and out of season". There is something wrong when a program works equally well for both Catholics and Protestants, and when Protestants are applauding because we are becoming "true disciples" through their program. We have not been able to examine any of the books used, but what we can see in the facilitator's manuals does not appear to be dissident material, and quotes are from solid Catholic sources.

Andrew M. Greeley Website

Sat, 08/28/2010 - 21:00
Andrew Greeley is a self-described author, priest, and sociologist. This site features excerpts from his novels, reprints of his homilies, opinion papers, and speeches. This is the perfect site to avoid. Not only does almost every excerpt from his books sound like a steamy Harlequin romance, but his various articles show his great contempt for the authority of the Church.

Scripture Catholic

Sat, 08/28/2010 - 21:00
This site was created during the webmaster's journey out of Freemasonry and back to the Catholic Church. The material reflects issues that were critical to his personal journey, and is therefore, by no means, exhaustive. The site is intended to function as a quick Scriptural reference guide, and must of course be accompanied by further study of the Scriptures, the early Church Fathers and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Catacombers.com

Sat, 08/28/2010 - 21:00
Catacombers describes itself as an "online Catholic apostolate supporting Catholic artists in the creation of works that enhance faithfulness to the Church, its teachings and leadership, and reverence in Catholic liturgical worship." To this end, the site accepts written works, poetry and art to display or publish online. They also have several forums for artists to share ideas. This is a nice site not only for Catholic artists of all kinds, but also for Catholics who want to appreciate the beauty of our culture and take advantage of the many graces of our Catholic heritage.

Miles Christi Religious Order

Sat, 08/28/2010 - 21:00
Miles Christi is a religious order of priests and brothers seeking to encourage and inform college students on how to deepen their faith and grow in holiness. The order has a strong emphasis on education, manual labor, and the faithful restoration of the liturgy. It works to promote the sanctification of the laity by providing retreats, conferences and summer camps. Miles Christi is a faithful religious order which we highly recommend.

Seventh-Day Adventist 2 Roman Catholic

Fri, 08/27/2010 - 21:00
This site discusses apologetics issues relating specifically to the Seventh-Day Adventist faith, from a Roman Catholic perspective. Anyone trying to convert or debate a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist faith will find considerable resources to help them out here. Except for a couple of links we highly recommend this website.

Magis Institute

Thu, 08/26/2010 - 21:00
The Mission of the Magis Institute is to develop spiritual and intellectual resources which enable lay Catholic business leaders to aid the Roman Catholic Church to transform the culture and accomplish the "even more" ("the magis") of Ignatian spirituality. Over the past they have expanded their mission to include a Hollywood Initiative (to develop and assist a network of committed Catholics in the film and television industries), regional Catholic Prayer Breakfasts, the Family Wealth Forum, Spiritual Pilgrimages, as well as the promotion of two outside organizations: the Spitzer Center for Ethical Leadership and the Catholic Leadership Institute.

Georgetown Center for Liturgy

Thu, 08/26/2010 - 21:00
The Georgetown Center for Liturgy, "founded in 1981 by Georgetown University and Holy Trinity Catholic Church, is an education, research, and consultation center dedicated to transforming American Catholic parishes through the liturgical renewal initiated by the Second Vatican Council." Sadly, GCL and its staff claim allegiance to Vatican II while simultaneously disregarding and distorting many of its teachings. Likewise, GCL does not faithfully adhere to the liturgical norms and guidelines for the liturgy established by the Vatican. It is organizations like GCL that have misguided the faithful and led to the many liturgical abuses we see today.

Life4seekers

Wed, 08/25/2010 - 21:00
Life4Seekers, a project of the Catholic Agency to Support Evangelisation (CASE), is a Catholic outreach site designed to meet people where they are at using contemporary cultural images and language. The home page starts with basic questions about the meaning of life and happiness, exploring the many possible answers. Then, as users go deeper, subsequent page layers offer clear explanations of Catholic belief and the Church's answers to these questions. This site is a good example of evangelism. It speaks to those who have little or no faith and "meets them where they are at," but in doing so, maintains a constant focus on God, His Church, and the Sacraments. It is marred only by a few seemingly inadvertant links.

Chastity — In San Francisco?

Wed, 08/25/2010 - 21:00
This website is the work of a Catholic clinical psychotherapist. In it, the webmaster takes an in-depth look at psychological healing within the Roman Catholic mystical tradition. Though he does draw heavily on Church teachings and the writings of the Saints, as well as his own background in psychology, the conclusions he draws are purely his own. Further, there is often a disparity between his conclusions and the teachings of the Church herself. This disparity is often caused by the author's mistaken assumptions about the role of culture and recreation in a truly Catholic life. He assumes that responding to God means we must specifically "Catholicize" all our activities. For a complete explanation of this error, see Christians, Culture and Recreation.

RCL Faith First

Sun, 08/22/2010 - 21:00
FaithFirst.com is the online presence of the Faith First religious education series published by RCL Benziger. It describes the site as "the most up-to-date and comprehensive web site in Catholic religious education--with interactive activities correlated to every lesson on every grade level! With over 4 million visitors every month, FaithFirst.com is the most popular web site in Catholic education." Though Faith First is a well-known and popular resource for catechesis, its publisher, RCL Benziger, is known for infidelity. We advise the user to exercise caution while using this resource, or preferably use a series such as Faith and Life, which is know for fidelity to the Magisterium.

Aquinas Homeschool Books

Sun, 08/22/2010 - 21:00
Aquinas Homeschool Books is a family run discount bookstore where homeschooling families can find a wide variety of excellent educational resources that are in accord with Catholic doctrine. The site is well laid out and the materials offered are sound. The webmaster also provides some good commentary in the form of articles on homeschooling and curriculum advice.

Miracle of the Rosary Mission

Fri, 08/20/2010 - 21:00
The Miracle of the Rosary Mission (MRM) is an association of the faithful dedicated "to prayer and work for the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; the Eucharistic reign of Jesus Christ. . . . MRM advocates a life of faith centered in the Eucharist, sustained by the sacraments, and supported by Eucharistic adoration and Marian devotions." The website contains information on the different works and associations of the Mission, devotional information, and a small archive of documents. Just recently the site has begun to publish alleged messages from Our Lady to Darrell Bennett. These messages have not been approved by the local bishop. They are also promoting the cause of Luisa Piccarreta.

Society of Catholic Social Scientists

Wed, 08/18/2010 - 21:00
The Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS), founded in 1992, "boldly challenges a secularized approach to the social sciences by combining objective scholarly analysis with fidelity to the Magisterium." Their site serves as an introduction to the Society, a bulletin board for Society news and events, and a repository for articles written by members. The site is well organized but the long, text-driven home page and the bright color of some of the text makes it a bit hard on the eyes.

Aquinas Institute of Theology

Wed, 08/18/2010 - 21:00
The Aquinas Institute of Theology is a graduate school of theology and ministry sponsored collaboratively by the Dominicans. The mission of the school is to prepare students for leadership in the Church through theological scholarship and academic and pastoral training. Unfortunately, it seems that many of the courses offered by the Institute are littered with Protestant viewpoints and feminism, and often focus on a "contemporary" understanding of the Church. Those searching for an authentic preparation for ministry should look elsewhere.

St. Josaphat Tridentine Mass

Wed, 08/18/2010 - 21:00
This site is the web presence of historic St. Josaphat Catholic Church in Detroit Michigan. The site features a new Tridentine Mass section where you will find information about the Latin Mass, Latin/English Handouts, interesting one page news articles in .pdf format, and a real treasure — a video of the Missa Solemnis (Solemn High Mass) celebrated on Easter Sunday 1941 at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Chicago by Rev. J. R. Keane of the Order of Servites, narrated by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. Those who want to learn more about the Tridentine rite will be able to listen to chant and view excerpts from the Mass.

Most Holy Family Monastery

Tue, 08/17/2010 - 21:00
Most Holy Family Monastery, is a dissident, sedevacantist organization that challenges the papal authority of Pope John Paul II. They published a pamphlet entitled "101 Heresies of Anti-Pope John Paul II." A chief concern, running throughout the list of the Holy Father's alleged heresies involves his outreach to other faiths and efforts at ecumenism. The pamphlet's message is that by virtue of Pope John Paul II's heresies, his papacy is no longer valid. The Catholic Register in the Diocese of Lincoln, NE commented on their magazine, A Voice Crying in the Wilderness saying, That magazine, slick and expensive, is very anti-Catholic, and seems to have the purpose of luring unsuspecting Catholics into grave error and schism. There is no "Most Holy Family Monastery" in Fillmore, New York, listed in the official Catholic Directory. Therefore, it is not authentically Catholic at all. Fillmore is located in the Diocese of Buffalo, New York, and the bishop there has announced that the magazine and "Monastery" have no connection with the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, there are many anti-Catholic tricks abroad, some disguised one way and some another. Always check with your parish priest about "new magazines" claiming to be Catholic or religious.

American Catholic Lawyers Association

Mon, 08/16/2010 - 21:00
The American Catholic Lawyers Association (ACLA) "is a non-profit religious organization run by Catholics, to defend the rights of Catholics. Among other activities, [they] engage in pro bono, free legal services on behalf of Catholics needing legal defense in matters of faith and conscience." The website gives in-depth information on the organization, what they do, and some of the success they have had in their battles in the culture war. As an extension of their mission to defend Truth, they also provide a number of online resources. These include a library of Church documents on liberty and a question and answer section.
